Instant Gratification For the last month I have been ordering DVDs for school on eBay. Most of the transactions went smoothly, including ones where I accidentally placed multiple orders for the same item and received a refund for an item which was not in stock. The only problem I had was with an order that took much longer to arrive than I had expected. Shipping information was buried in the small print. Today I had a question concerning which version of the title was available. I want to get the live action versus the animated version. There was no information listed and no picture available. So, before sending an e-mail to the seller, I checked his feedback. The rating was 98.6%. Most of the negative comments had to do with shipping time. Does no one have ANY patience any more? Does anyone remember doing mail order by phone or mail? How long did it take to receive your SAT scores or your end of year transcripts? Did you get your passport in less a week? Due to electronic communications, people's expectations of reasonable turn around time has decreased. Within two days I received two requests from the same person for my SFA course! Does anyone remember the Pony Express? How long did it take to deliver a message that way?

[Link] | The Richard Burton '1984' does not seem to be available, so I ordered the original from e-bay. I also am also bidding on a copy of 'On the Beach' for school. They are much cheaper than at the video store. E-Bay and QVC are my latest addictions. Much more convenient than going to the mall. Always did do mail order by phone. Buying on line can be dangerous to the budget.

[Link] | Got back from London on Thursday. Trip was relaxing. Opera was poor. Music was bad, lyrics were worse. Orwell would not be pleased. Reviewers disliked it. Stick to the book! I may rent the movie to see how badly that was done. There are three different versions.

Life in the bizarre lane. I have a former student named Mike. He was attending the local Voc/Tech school when his mother kicked him out for getting into a fight with his step-father. She dumped him on his father's doorstep in Phila. Since he was now living in Phila., he was not eligible to continue his program. And, there was no transportation. He attempted to enroll in the neighborhood Phila. public high school, but gave up in disgust after the secretary gave his father the run-a-round. Mike has been sitting home in his father's apartment ever since. He is not in school, does not have a job, and is waiting to be approved for SSI, which his mother never bothered to get for him when he was younger. He has Asperger's Syndrome. He is a whiz with computers, but has the social skills of a child. He plans to enter a vocational training program soon offered by a local agency. Anyway, after dinner I had an urgent e-mail from Michael. His father was out for the evening and the toilet was overflowing. Could I bring over a plunger? As I was answering, telling him to walk to the nearest Dollar Store and buy a plunger, he called. None of his neighbors speak English. He had no money. Did I have a plunger? Now, I am not sure which is crazier, that he expected me to have a plunger and bring it over, or that I did. I also brought a snake, old towels, and Draino. The Magic Grandma rides again!
"The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, But the queerest they ever did see Was the night on the marge of Lake LeBarge I cremated Sam McGee."
On Maudy Thursday she took a trip with her trusty plunger at her hip. On Maudy Thursday she took a ride, with a bottle of Draino by her side. On Maudy Thursday she saved the day. Yippy yo, Yippy you, Yippy hey, hey, hey.

[Link] | It is very dangerous for me to be home. Yesterday, between going on line and going into stores, I spent an absolute fortune. Now I am about to go out shopping again. But first, I must put gas into my car, which will leave me bankrupt! Between the IRS and upcoming dental bills, I will be a candidate for the poorhouse! It's a good thing I have a job.

[Link] | My Captain coerced me into being a judge for the R7 awards. The most bizarre recommendations were from COs who asked that their own children be considered for Junior Member of the Year. This is going to be movie week in school. I will be showing "Ivanhoe," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," and "Inherit the Wind." Tough week! My latest addiction is e-bay. My credit card bill will be bananas. Getting mostly old Broadway shows on CD and old movies on DVD. Also got an action figure of Spock for my ship. Shopping is fun!

[Link] | Due to icy road conditions, school was delayed for two hours. By the time I would get there, it would be time to leave. So, I will spend the day trying to catch up. Haha! Salted the driveway. Wind Chill is 3 degrees! And, it's supposed to snow again on Friday. I already used up 100 puunds of salt!

[Link] | As usual I have committed myself to too many projects at one time and feel stressed. How to say no is one of my biggest problems. Ice on roads. Morning rush hour may be difficult. All I want to do is sleep. Yesterday it was a bigger zoo at work than usual. Constant change. I just shrug my shoulders and keep on plugging away.

Progress Reports I am doing the progress reports for school. Many of the kids have emotional problems that interfere with their academic achievement. That's what is says on their records. But I have an alternate opinion. So many of my students are indulged, enabled, and infantalized, and have been since they were very young, that they use their "helplessness" as an excuse. "Oh, I have ADHD. My meds aren't working. I'm depressed." How will they be able to function after high school? The structure was never there, the expectations were minimal, and self reliance was not an issue. What ever happened to limit setting? What is the difference between school phobia and truancy if not the parents' unwillingness to confront the child and drag him out of bed? Now instead of, "The dog ate my homework" it's "My hard drive crashed." Well, do it the old fashioned way, use a pencil! While the parents say, "Oh, my poor fragile child," I am thinking, "Whose fault is it that he is unable to function on his own at 18! Are you going to support him forever, and cover for him from the grave?" End of rant. Not quite. This spell check is as bad as the others!

Hairdo My hair is growing back. This is what it currently looks like. As it grows in, I will change the style. Thanks Allyson for the icon site. This is better than bald and more conservative than my purple wig. Marco never knew me as anything but a redhead. Better to look like Eddie Munster than Mr.Clean! Hi, Tom!
